“But I’m too young to make a Will!”

Are these words you hear yourself saying? Making a Will is often considered to be something that you do when you get older but the reality is that it is never too early to get your affairs in order – and given that you can make a new Will at any time, there is certainly no disadvantage in making a Will as soon as possible after your 18th birthday.

It may be that you feel that you don’t really own anything so why would you need a Will, but a Will doesn’t just deal with money and property, it can also set out things such as:

  • Who would be guardian to your children;
  • Who would look after your pets;
  • Who would inherit your personal items such as photographs, jewellery, cars, etc; and
  • What would happen to your digital assets. This includes your social media accounts, photos and other media stored on devices, and digital accounts such as ebay and paypal.

If you don’t have a Will your assets will be distributed according to the Intestacy Rules and this may not necessarily accurately reflect your wishes. Your digital assets may not be dealt with at all because the family member dealing with your estate may not even know they exist.

Another advantage to having a Will in place is that, depending on the size of your estate, it may enable your estate to be administered without the added expense and stress of a family member having to apply to the Probate Registry.
